RULES OF PARTICIPATION
1 FRAMEWORK

2. CALENDARIZATION
2.1 Date for the submission of films to the competition
31st May, 2023
2.2 Dates of evaluation and selection of films for competition
30th June, 2023
The films in competition are evaluated, by three members of a jury, to be appointed.
2.3 Closing date for the programme
(Films in exhibition and competition):
July 31, 2023
2.4 DATE of Screening of Short Films
19th, 20th, 21st (Competition screening and final and prize-giving) and 22nd October 2023 (special screening of prize winners)
3. REGISTRATION
The films in competition will be submitted until May 31st, 2023, being submitted through the platform https://filmfreeway.com/
4. LABELS
Each entry must be marked with:
- Name | full address | contact | tax number (NIF);
- Title | objectives | synopsis | locations | duration | format | production year;
- Section | format | category(ies) for participation.
5. ELIGIBILITY
Films in competition must comply with the following requirements:
- Production date in 2021, 2022 or 2023;
- 15 minutes duration;
- Have wave activities as a theme, giving preference to the western context;
- Not be in commercial distribution.
6. LANGUAGES
The official languages are Portuguese and English
Entries in any language are accepted provided that the following requirements are respected:
- Subtitles or voice-over in Portuguese or English;
- Synopsis written in Portuguese or English;
- The film in another language must have Portuguese or English subtitles.
7. PRIZES, JURIES AND CATEGORIES
7.1 Prizes
- Best Film Award: 600 euros
- Best Cinematography Award: 300
- West Award - 300
- Audience Award: 200
Additionally, the Festival Jury may also attribute Honourable Mentions in each category.
7.2 Juries
The juries of the competition are composed of professionals in the cultural and artistic field of recognized national and/or international merit, selected by the Mostra's organization.
The juries will be announced, in due time, on a date to be defined by the organization.

8. SUBMISSION, FORMATS AND RIGHTS
8.1 Submission
Completion and submission of all required materials must be certified for each of the films submitted.
8.2 Formats
The films submitted must have at least the following or similar requirements:
- Full HD (1920×1080 px), 16:9;
- HD (1080×720 px), 16:9;
- Blu-ray;
- DVD
8.3 Rights
By registering a film, the entrant ensures ownership of all rights inherent to the registration and access to those rights for the duration of the Exhibition. Registration guarantees that the rights of use held by authors, copyright owners and other agents involved in the production of the submitted film, with the exception of rights safeguarded by companies holding exhibition rights, have been legitimately acquired and the organization reserves the right to use them, not being hindered by copyright or other third party rights, whatever they may be.
9. NOTIFICATION TO THE WINNERS
The works submitted to the competition will be evaluated in advance and the winners will be notified in due time. The presence of the winning entrants at the Exhibition and Award Ceremony is strongly recommended. The decisions of the jury and the organisation of the Exhibition are final and not subject to any legal appeal.
10. SELECTED FILMS
Materials should be sent as soon as possible after acceptance of participation in the Exhibition. Additionally, it's necessary to indicate the e-mail contact of the owner of the legal rights of the work, and a signed document when sending the copy, mentioning the authorization to exhibit in the Mostra.
10.1 Exhibition Catalogue
The catalogue will include the following information: original title, international title, title in Portuguese, director, running time, country(ies) of production, year of production, release status, format, production, producer, distributor, short and feature synopsis in Portuguese and English, filmography of the director and contact details of the producer and the person responsible for the film's copy. It will also be necessary to send an image of the film. This image file must be at least 10 cm wide and 300 dpi resolution, compressed in JPEG - level 8 format.
10.2 Press kits
Film representatives are kindly requested to send press kits and promotional material of the films for distribution to the Mostra's press and guests.
10.3 Trailers and Excerpts
After the official film selection, Mostra may use excerpts of the film, with a maximum of 3 minutes, for promotional purposes. If possible, we request a link to the trailer of the film or the video file of the trailer itself.
10.4 Promotion Pictures
For the promotion of the whole selection and each one of the films, Mostra may use any digital photograph or clip of the film (always less than 3 minutes).
11. RESPONSIBILITY OF THE SURF SHORT FILM FESTIVAL
The organization reserves the right to reclassify the films and forward them to other categories when deemed appropriate. Mostra refuses any responsibility for entries of films that are classified in the wrong category or that enter the Mostra's records after the deadline stipulated for that purpose.
Mostra's responsibility is confined to circumstances of intentional or negligent conduct that apply only in case of loss or damage to an entered work. The Mostra's organization does not accept any responsibility for the cancellation of the Mostra's realization for reasons beyond its control.
